it is not a wasp but a kind of blister beetle. this little fellow’s latin name is mylabris phalerata. it has sharp yellow and black stripe. it has a defensive secretion called cantharidan. according to wikipedia, cantharidin is a poisonous chemical that causes blistering of the skin. cantharidin is used medically to remove warts and is collected for this purpose from species of the genera mylabris and lytta, especially lytta vesicatoria, better known as “spanish fly”. This photo was taken at herboland at lamma island, it was busy consuming a dandelion flower.
