桂花 sweet olive

桂花,原來是喬木,屬於木樨科。因為在香港公園內,種植多作圍欄作用的矮細品種,讓我誤以為是灌木。桂花的別稱,像她的品種一樣多:木犀、丹桂、岩桂、九里香。這陣子,經過多處,公園、園圃也好,都被幽幽的甜而清的芳香勾留,她們大抵是四季桂 (semperflorens) 。

guihua or sweet olive is a flowering plant dear to the heart of many chinese. our folklore said there was a sweet olive tree on the moon. we use the flower to make tea, wine and desert. in fact osmanthus fragrans is native to asia. it is also the city flower of hangzhou. guihua is a contrasting character to me. its flower is tiny and low-key, yet its fragrance lures everyone.
