i first knew about ginkgo when traveling with my family during summer holiday; still a school kid then. it was in china in some ancient chinese garden. the ginkgo trees there were magnificent in size, posture and history. the tour guide said they were in hundreds year old. there, my impression on ginkgo is gigantic, ancient and very chinese. i thought this tree type was only found in china. (in some sense it is true; the existing ginkgo plant is native to china).

as i thought that ginkgo only existed in china, i ran into this spiritual plant in the western world; i didn’t even know it was ginkgo then. it was the first time i made it to kew gardens in england, a place i wanted to pay homage for long and try being there everytime when visiting england. somewhere close to two exhibition halls, a medium bright yellow tree striked me. immediately i picked up a few pieces of the fallen leaves on the ground. they were of unique and most beautiful shape, resembling a piece of cloud on the head. i am still keeping them these days. and the next time when i visited england again, i made it to the gardens and look for the adorable tree again. silly me, i was expecting the same bright yellow, having no sense of trees live the seasons. it was a year or two after that finally it came to my sense that these fascinating leaves are from ginkgo. i was surprised knowing that ginkgo lives “abroad” and they can be of smaller sizes and much younger.

that’s my ginkgo story.

and now, everytime visiting the botanic garden or chater garden, I can’t not saying hello to the ginkgo there. ginkgo is deciduous. I worried so much about the ginkgo at botanic garden ever since spring came this year, because it looked quite deadly throughout early and mid spring. what a relief and lovely surprise last week seeing it springing life.

  • from kew royal botanic gardens – ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) – this remarkable tree is known as a ‘living fossil’, as it is the sole survivor of an ancient group of trees that date back to beyond the time of the dinosaurs. ginkgo fossils are common in the rocks of the jurassic and cretaceous, but today the ginkgo tree is the only member of its genus, which is the only genus in its family, which is the only family in its order, which is the only order in its class. the maidenhair tree remains virtually unchanged today and represents the only living bridge between ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ plants (between ferns and conifers).
