berries always excite me. i spotted two of them not too far from home lately – mock strawberry and native raspberry.

strawberry probably needs a lot of attention in cultivation, but other berries seem to enjoy growing wildly and easily.

mock strawberry is a perennial herb. It lies low. it does look like strawberry in many senses: the leaves, flowers and fruit; except the colour of the flowers – mock strawberry blossoms are yellow in colour; the leaves are trifoliate and the fruits are many achenes in the shape of a lovely red ball.

native raspberry’s blosooms are pink and adorable. it however has scrambling, prickly stems. we are now at the flowering season of this perennial shrub. hope that i can catch a glimpse of their succulent and beautiful ruby-like fruitlets later in summer.
