ash botanic

ash is less known in hong kong, even though it can be seen all around the world.

this is formosan ash, native to taiwan. the blossoms look like a pale lilac veil over the crown. spellbound.

ash (fraxinus species) is a genus of flowering plants in the olive and lilac family, oleaceae. ashes are usually deciduous. most of them are dioecious, having male and female flowers on separate plants. their fruit are samara, and the seeds are popularly known as keys or helicopter seeds.

i am not familiar with ash but have the sense that it is quite spiritual to the western world. so i look up more about this type of tree. fraxinus ,the generic name originated in latin, meaning “spear”. in the ancient world, spears were used as weapon; the handles were made from this wood. western myths relate ash to the origin of the earth and human kind. in greece powerful families were believed to have come from ash trees. norse gods populated their sublunary world with a newborn race by breathing a human soul and spirit into an ash tree. in norse myth, the most sacred ash is yggdrasil, which is believed to be the entire support structure of the universe.
