vitex negundo var. cannabifolia is native to southern china and se asia. it is a deciduous shrub and has neat and pretty details.
it is quite easy to distinguish v. negundo var. cannabifolia from the leaves and flowers because of the fragrance and their appearances. it has palmately compound leaf, usually with five leaflets, rarely three. the flowering season is at early summer. the florets are light purple and orderly bloom at tips of branches.
the pleasant appearance is not the only quality of this plant. it is rich in nectar and attracts bees and butterflies as well as some birds. older generations and farmers in taiwan now burn bundles of branches with leaves to keep insects away. and it is one of the ingredients of the cantonese 24-herb tea.
