seeing kassod blossoming lately, decided to write about it. i have the habit of checking whether i’ve written the subject before. ha! last year around the same time, i was impressed by the beautiful bloom and made a post about the tree.
kassod is quite commonly planted in this city. because it grows fast and tall and it is evergreen and has a pretty and dense crown. it is native to south asia including siam (check out the latin name) but is also found in china and other parts of asia.
it is easy to recognize from the alternate, pinnate compound leaves as it is from the faaceae family and senna genus. it is also well-known of the hardness of its wood. one of the common usage is as railway crossties.
what trigger me to write about the tree this time, is my two latest encounters.
the 1.5 century old kassod at hong kong cemetery was in full bloom when i visited it two weeks ago. i didn’t realize in the beginning, because the beautiful tree is so tall. when i walked pass under it, i was only busy appreciating its beautiful pattern of the bark on the thick round tree trunk and smelling in the green and spirit of the awesome tree towering over me. i stepped further away. the yellow caught my eyes. the tree is blossoming all over. the flowers in radiating clusters look like dancing on the tree.
few days back, i have had a close up with its flowers and fruit. a branch fell from a tree nearby gave me a chance to have a good view: five petals form the bowl-shape bloom, pretty in yellow. the pods are also nicely coloured and shaped. kassod fruit turn purple when mature.
