one of the biggest individual flower festivals in taiwan is happening right now. it is the tung blossom festival. as taiwan is getting really hot among hong kongers in recent years, more people is aware of this plant. i seem to benefit from this increasing awareness. i first met this plant in kowloon park two years ago at the best time of the year. the blog post i wrote afterwards shoot up in page view around this time of the year in 2013 and this year as well.
then earlier this month, i found another wood-oil in the botanic garden.
so i decided to learn more about this plant.
- 油桐 / 三年桐
- 木油樹 / 千年桐
there are three species under the genus vernicia, commonly called tung or tung-oil tree. they are
- vernicia cordata – native to southern japan. common name is japanese tungoil tree
- vernicia fordii – native to southern china, burma, northern vietnam. commonly known as tung-oil tree
- vernicia montana – native to southern china, indo-china. common name is wood-oil tree.
what usually seen in hong kong is no.3. one of its chinese common names is thousand-year tung. that points out the longer vitality, compare to vernicia fordii with a chinese common name of three-year tung.
in taiwan, both fordii and montana are common there. yet the latter are of larger number as well.
obviously the blossoms of wood-oil and tung-oil are gorgeous. but other parts of these plants are interesting too. i particularly love the leaves their beautiful shape as well as the two cute cup-like glands at the base of the leaf.
