*白千層 paper bark tree (melaleuca quinquenervia) 樹榦會脫皮,木質組織約在一吋下出現 the wood tissue is around one inch down from the bark.

 

*海芋、白掌 (spathiphyllum kochii) 的花序叫「佛燄苞花」。 flowers of spath or peace lily are produced in a spadix, surrounded by a long spathe. spadax

 

*非洲楝 / 非洲桃花心木 african mahogany (khaya senegalensis)桃花心木 west indies mahogany (swietenia mahagoni) 同科不同屬。兩樹樹幹都呈裂片。前者只限局部且較不規則,後者通樹幹有裂面,而且互相覆蓋。these two trees are from the same family but of different genus. both show fractures on the bark. but the latter are flacky all through the trunks and many of the fractures are overlapping, while the former only has sporadic fractures.

 

*仙丹花屬 (ixora) 龍船花 (ixora chinensis)中國種花型如繡球。小葉龍船花(泰國),大葉龍船花(爪哇),屬洋仙丹花。the chinese species of ixora has a common name in chinese translated as red ribbon ball that is self-explanatory. there are many other species of ixora, the main ones planted in hong kong are from thailand and java. ixora

 

*秋楓 autumn maple (bischofia javanica)- 本地原生,常見於新界及風水林。特徵:常綠。三出複葉,葉基寬楔形,邊緣淺鋸齒。樹幹樹皮粗糙但無縱裂。evergreen. leaves palmately 3(-5)-foliolate; leaflet blades ovate, elliptic, obovate, or elliptic-ovate, papery, base broadly cuneate to obtuse, margins with 2 or 3 teeth per cm, apex acute or caudate-acuminate. plants dioecious.

重陽木 chinese bishopwood (bisehofia polycarpa) – 落葉喬木。落葉前葉片會轉紅。樹皮縱裂。三出複葉互生,基部圓形或近心形,邊緣有密集鈍鋸齒。deciduous, longitudinally. leaves palmately 3-foliolate; papery, base rounded or shallowly cordate; margins with 4 or 5 teeth per cm. plants dioecious.

-both autumn maple and chinese bishopwood are of the same family, 大戟科 euphorbiaceae, and same genus  秋楓屬 bischofia. they look quite alike, for example leaves are three-foliolate. the above information highlight some of their characteristic which differentiate them.

*假柿木薑子 persimmon-leaved litsea (litsea monopetala) - 本地常見樹種。葉較大互生,寬卵形,先端鈍或圓形。傘形花序,與潺槁樹的花相近。但果長卵形,跟潺槁球形果有分別。this plant is common in hong kong. it is native to southwest china and south asia like nepal.  evergreen. leaves broadly elliptic, quite big, apex blunt or with a small point. flowers densely hairy, in dense clusters, assemble blossoms of pond spice. fruit borne on a cup, on slender stalk.

*對葉榕 opposite-leaved fig / rough-leaved stem-fig (ficus hispida) – 榕樹中只有對葉榕的葉是對生的。而一對葉與下對葉成九十度角。厚紙質,非常粗糙。the common names of this plant is self-explanatory. it however different from other fig in the leaves arrangement, its leaves are grown oppositely. figs hang on long stems.opposite-leaved fig

水同木 common yellow stem-fig (ficus fistulosa) 與對葉榕相像,但可留意葉序,及葉面隱隱有斑點,葉正面深綠色,葉軸突出,葉背具疏柔毛,葉脈突出。水同木的幼枝空心,故亦別稱空心榕。幹生花,常在樹幹上結實累累,因狀似母豬的乳頭,故別稱豬母乳。the young twigs are hollow. leaves are alternately arranged, elliptical, and drawn into a leaf tip. figs borne on long stalks and in clusters.

 

*蔥蘭,韭蘭都是石蒜科蔥蘭屬,有卵球形鱗莖。原產美洲。前者花向上,後者花漏斗狀,花冠較大,稍向下。後者又稱風雨蘭。

autumn zephyrlily (zephyranthes candida) and rosepink zephyrlily (zephyranthes carinata (spreng.) herbert) are both native to america and are of the genus of zephyranthes from the family of amaryllidaceae. to differentiate them, their chinese common names give good tips. the former has leaves assemble spring onion, the latter garlic chieves. autumn zephyrlilyrosepink zephyrlily

 *白楸 turn-in-the-wind (mallotus paniculatus) – 多葉柄為稍盾形。喬木。

白背葉 white-backed leaf (mallotus apelta)  葉非盾形。灌木或小喬木。

-both these plants are white at the back of their leaves. the easiest way to differentiate them is that we can see angles in the shape of the leaves of turn-in-the-wind, while white-backed leaf is smooth in the shape of the leaves; also the former is tree the latter is scrub or small tree.white-backed leaf
