first, my apologies to followers of this blog. umbrella movement has been ongoing in my home city for three weeks now. i couldn’t put my heart outside of the fight. during this time i have built a tumblr site to collect news update, photo and opinions about the movement.

today, no progress in terms of government’s response. a little voice inside me however told myself to get together. so here we go.

balloon vine / love-in-a-puff (cardiospermum halicacabum) is a climbing plant common in tropical and subtropical africa and asia. i however met it for the first time this past sunday.

you won’t forget it once you saw this plant. a little background first. balloon vine is from the soapberry family (sapindaceae) while most of the plants in the family are trees like lychee and longan, balloon vine is one of the rare vines.

balloon in the name refers to its lovely and unique capsules. the fruiting season began late summer. the fruits hang along soft and sprawling stalk like a string of puffy bells, thus the chinese common name “bells spreading on the ground”. it’s another name “love-in-a-puff” meanwhile refers to its seeds. these little spheres turn from green to black when mature. each has a white heart-shaped scar.

its leaves are easy to recognize and pretty too; trifoliate with highly lobed leaflets.
