when i was a kid, when people talked about nature spectacle and travel aboard, go canada to catch the autumn maple was a must. later people travel closer, to japan, korea and taiwan. but don’t you know that we have our own maple.
unlike the typical canadian maple that have five separated lobes and sharp edges on the leaves, trident maple – a native to eastern china (, japan & taiwan) – are smaller in size as a tree as well as of the leaves.
it is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree. the leaves are in opposite pairs, usually with three lobes; on mature trees the lobes forward-pointing and with smooth margins, on young trees with more spreading lobes and serrated margins. the flowers are produced in spring, yellow-green, in pendulous corymbs; they are small, with five greenish sepals and five yellow-white petals and eight stamens. the fruit is a samara with two-winged seeds; the wings are forward-pointing and often overlapping each other. even though it is a china native, i realize its existence from the hong kong park and not in the wild. every winter they display a pretty spectacle on a slope near the dragonfly pond in the park and i never miss it. but i have to admit i have been paying attention to them during winter too much, i am yet to catch their flowering season. i am making a note to check it out later in the year.
meanwhile, check out trident maple beautiful winter red and their lovely samara.
