悼老樹 mourning old trees in our city

the century-old stonewall chinese banyan at bonham road crosses centre street tumbled down yesterday. my heart aches over the death of this old friend in my neighbourhood. it saddened me more as we lost two valuable trees along this road in three months. in april, a big-leaved fig fell down not far away from here.

according to south china morning post, around 40 fallen trees were reported under the amber rainstorm signal yesterday. and just this past sunday, another old chinese banyan tree crashed down at the former government headquarters in central.

in 2012 july hong kong was hit by a typhoon directly. a rare typhoon signal no. 10 was hoisted, we lost many trees as a result. i wrote about the《樹災 tree disaster》on this blog. unfortunately the term is haunting us every now and then. what worse is that many “tree disasters” happened in recent years are due to human fault more than bad weather. this city is proud to have extensive green assets, but should be ashamed of our general ignorance and mismanagement over our trees (and wild lives). i blame all the roadwork and construction and ignorant people who caused harm to our city trees, i blame the failing tree management of the government. i also worry for other trees in the city because every time when tree fell, there will be a series of tree “cutting” (i’ll call them “slaughtering”) around.
