噪鵑吃相 an asian koel is eating

i miss the chanting of koel before summer. when i was a kid, every year before summer went serious, the wood on the slope opposite my home always echoed the very loud song of koel male.

not sure the reason, this soundtrack of summer prelude stopped playing in recent years.

probably not related, but a fun fact about asian koel in our city. back in 2012, the species made to media headline when some people complained about the noise of the bird.

few days back, i was walking past a big private housing estate and spotted this fellow high on a tree not far away from a playground.

usually i found it difficult to trace the bird when hearing it sings. they are good at moving around inside dense vegetation. this male koel (bluish black vs brownish female) however was probably too concentrated in his afternoon meal. he was very quiet and focused in pecking fruit.  asian koel is omnivorous, while adults feed mainly on fruit.

what he was eating seems to be betel fruit or some palm fruit.
