chinese violet is native to africa but you can easily find it in the wild of south east asia including hong kong. according to flora of zimbabwe, subspecies gangetica occurs in tropical asia and the pacific. it is a slightly more shrubby herb with larger purple flowers.

this perennial spreading herb gives us good information in its scientific name :

asystasia means inconsistency and relates to the fact that the corolla is more or less regular which is unusual in the family acanthaceae; gangetica is derived from the ganges river in india where it is presumed the species occurs; micrantha – “micr” means small; “antha” says flower.

another nice piece of information is that asystasia has developed a good relationship with the honeybee that pollinates the flowers. the flowers also serve as food for beetles and the plant receives visits from ants as well as butterflies.
