i enjoy checking out insects (many of them, but not all, i can’t help for example smashing mosquito when they bite me) when they are around, but haven’t really studied them as much as plants or birds.
few days ago however the green ‘tongue’ of this fellow triggered me to learn more. i am amazed by the wonderful colour of this tool of an insect. in the beginning i thought it was a moth. so, first thing i typed “moth green tongue” on a search engine. a wikipedia page appeared on top of the search result. it is a detailed on charles darwin’s experience on a kind of moth named xanthopan morgani. being a shallow learner, i browsed the article quickly and looked for a keyword. proboscis is what i picked up. it refers in many insect the elongated sucking mouth part.
next target is to find out what exactly this insect is. i started looking up photos of moth from my insect photographic guide. no finding. then moved on to butterfly photos. in the end, there is one with resemblances. it is called euthalia phemius. to make sure, i typed this name and looked for online photos. finally i am convinced. it is indeed a common butterfly in hong kong and is known as white-edged blue baron. it belongs to the family of nymphalidae. according to wikipedia, “most species have a reduced pair of forelegs and many hold their colourful wings flat when resting. they are also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies, because they are known to stand on only four legs while the other two are curled up”
