茅膏菜屬，英文學名 drosera 的俗名是 sundews ，很象形的屬名。因為此多年生草本，葉面毛絨，這些毛毛的觸鬚分泌「汁液」形似朝露，作用吸引及消化昆蟲之用。
drosera is one big genera of carnivorous plants, with over 190 species around the world known now. most of them are perennial herbaceous. it is commonly known as the sundews, vividly outline the outstanding feature of its leaves, the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that assemble morning dew drops.
there are about five sundews recorded in hong kong so far.
and i believe these little ones belong to one of the hong kong natives called drosera oblanceolata. this species is not rare in the city. but one has to be careful to find them, usually at moist rock or slope ends.
the glittering and elegant leaf features are jewels to our eyes but deadly weapons to small bugs the plants target at. this mucilage helps luring insects to the plant, gluing and finally to digest them.
