nandina or sacred bamboo is native to asia. it caught my attention for long. it is green overall, but there are always few “black sheep”, some leaves just stand out in red.

finally, i found out the name of this plant, and then learnt from wiki that “the young leaves in spring are brightly coloured pink to red before turning green; old leaves turn red or purple again before falling.” chinese can turn any plant into medicine. this plant is toxic overall but it is antitussive.

apparently i caught sacred bamboo, which is not a bamboo at all in botany, fruiting time yesterday.

reference: wiki – Nandina domestica commonly known as nandina, heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, is a suckering shrub in the Barberry family, Berberidaceae. It is a monotypic genus, with this species as its only member. It is native to eastern Asia from the Himalaya east to Japan.
